Designing Account Recovery for Privileged Business Accounts
Strong MFA is valuable, but privileged identity design also depends on how an administrator account is recovered when ordinary access fails.
Recovery is part of authentication
An administrator protected by strong sign-in controls can still be exposed if password reset, help-desk verification, recovery email, phone, or break-glass procedures are weak. Treat every recovery path as another way to obtain privileged control.
Avoid circular dependencies
A recovery design fails if all recovery methods depend on the same account or platform that is unavailable. Critical identities need documented recovery paths that responders can access during an outage or compromise without weakening routine controls.
Make ownership explicit
Document who can authorize privileged recovery, how that identity is verified, where emergency credentials or procedures are controlled, and how use is logged and reviewed. Test the process before an incident forces the first real attempt.
